Meet Rani, the person behind design and style blog La Maison Jolie and the designer of her daughter’s gorgeous room, that we’ll have the pleasure of showing you today! Rani’s passion for interior design goes way back when her grandfather bought her a first dollhouse. As time passed, she went on from sticking craft paper onto the walls and rearranging tiny furniture in her beloved dollhouse, to painting walls, styling and updating accessories in her own home in Melbourne. As a way to document her day-to-day design odysseys, in 2011 she came up with La Maison Jolie where presently Rani talks about design ideas, inspirations, DIY projects and much more. Recently Rani decided it was time to give her daughter Elie’s room, who is now turning three years old, a mini makeover, from a sunny peach baby’s room to a more sophisticated yet playful toddler room. Keep in mind this entire makeover was done on a very tight budget. Nonetheless, the results are stunning!
We start our fantastic tour by Rani first introducing us with the fresh coat of colour she has chosen. “The colour palette in Elie’s room is a collection of grey hues in varying intensities and tones with playful pops of colour (such as mustard and shades of blush, petrol blue, moss green and charcoal grey). The colour inspiration for Elie’s room comes from the main floral art print in pretty pastel shades, and I slowly built and layered the design on from there“.
As we enjoy the soft tone of Miller Mood from Dulux, covering the striped wallpaper, the charming whimsical artwork immediately catches our eye! “I absolutely adore the beautiful watercolour limited edition print of the Flying Carnival from Mrs Mighetto“, she adds.The Scandinavian vibe can be felt all over the room!
Rani added a lot of texture through different fabrics as well as accessories. “Even though her room is fully carpeted, I like the addition of a textural jute rug and lots of layers on her bed in the softest cotton and linen to add visual interest and also the feeling of lux and lived-in comfort. Wooden baskets, throws, cushions all add to the sense of textural comfort“.
To round it all off, Rani bought a captivating vintage wardrobe that cost next to nothing, however it needed a touch here and there. “I love vintage furniture, and it just felt right to get Elie a vintage wardrobe for her ‘big girl’ dresses. The wooden wardrobe needed a couple of coats of paint, and now it’s resplendent in platinum grey and complements the rest of the room beautifully“. There’s always something magical in restoring an old piece of furniture!
The newest addition to the room is the most gorgeous dollhouse. Perhaps it will inspire Elie to take her mother’s path? “For now it’s hours of play and fun for the little girl“, her mother adds.
In the end, Rani left us with a useful tip!
“Take your time to source interesting and whimsical decor, art, accessories and furniture. Add plenty of textural items to create an ambience of lux “cocoon-like comfort”! Baskets, throws, rugs, soft linen quilts, cushions, pretty bed linen all add to the sense of textural comfort and luxury, so layer, layer, layer!“
Designing a kid’s room is a never-ending game. “Elie’s room is a work in progress. It’s never quite finished since I keep finding beautiful décor accessories, whimsical toys and wonderful small businesses to support“.
