We have a special treat for you today. Lotte, a trained interior stylist and part-time school teacher from the Netherlands, has designed the most creative room ever for her two year old son, Vic. We caught up with her to learn more about her inspiration behind this incredible space. Ready to take a fun circus tour? Read on.

Tell us more about the circus vibes in Vic’s room! How did you come up with the idea, or was it Vic who convinced you?

In January we went to a circus with the family for the first time. Vic loved it! He is obsessed with horses and during the pause he made a ride on a horse.
When I was designing the children’s rooms for the new house, I came across the wallpaper of Annet Weelink design, a super cool circus wallpaper that I immediately fell in love with!

What is the first thing that you purchased for the room?

I think the wallpaper was what I first bought for this room, with soon afterwards the nice flag bunting from Dille & Kamille.

How did you decide the colour scheme?

I’ve taken the wallpaper as a starting point. I even considered giving a wall a green / grey color that matches the wallpaper, but I thought this was a little too obvious. I decided to go for a brown color. The bear in the wallpaper is a bit the same brown color.
For the circus tent that I painted on the wall, I actually just grabbed the color that we had left from the living room. I thought this was already a beautiful color and it was completely perfect for a circus tent.

What were the must-haves for the room?

The wallpaper and the junior bed from Manowoods. I thought the shape of this bed was so cool! It reminded me of the shape of a circus tent and the bed is also called “Cirque”, so this seemed meant to be!

Did you have any difficulties decorating the room?

The most difficult corner of the room turned out to be the best! And then I mean the “crazy” cove just below the dormer window. I soon intended to turn this into a chill corner. At first I wanted to hang red and white striped cloths here, to create a circus effect. Then I thought that this was probably going to be a dust nest, so I came up with the idea of just painting the tent.

What is your no1 favourite element in the room (and Vic’s)?

I think the circus tent. I’m quite proud of it, because I made it myself and Vic loves to play here or read a book (mainly with his big brother).

What is your opinion about today’s kids’ room trends?

I love them! The deeper and warm colors, the natural materials (love for rattan). Panther prints, animal rugs and animal heads, I love the jungle vibe! Sam, Vics big brother, has a jungle room. This room was in the Top 10 Insta Kids’ Rooms’ Summer 2019 of @kids_interiors.com
I don’t have a daughter myself, but I love the romantic, bohemian trend aswell.

If you had only one tip of advice for parents decorating their kids’ rooms, what would it be?

I would first of all look at what your child likes. Does he or she love animals? Does he or she love a certain color or theme? Based on this, I would determine which atmosphere you want to create and how you will combine this with what appeals to your child. Consider with which color you can create this atmosphere and see with which colors you can combine this color. I love second-hand (natural) accessories, these make a room original and less stiff. Above all, try to give it your own twist and not just to take over a room from pinterest or Instagram, make it personal. Don’t be too reserved and just dare! 🙂
