The perfect antidote to energetic playrooms, a palette of the most delicate summer pastels can work wonders in creating a serene space of slumber for your little ones. Versatile, contemporary and with wonderful light-infusing properties, it’s a colour scheme most often associated with girls’ rooms. Don’t be misled though. These soft tonal palettes work well for boys too, and it’s not difficult to find variations on the theme with light touches of blue, green and grey.
So, before you embark on your kids’ bedroom or nursery makeover journey, what defines a summer pastel? The answer is a colour mixed with just enough white to make it pale while still maintaining an essence of its origin. Think creamy mints, rose beiges, sun-bleached terracotta’s and tangerines and the palest of primroses. Light touches of lavender and lilac, gentle fawns and velvety vanilla achieve balance with lashings of natural nudes.
See below for a compilation of some of our favourite summer pastel inspired rooms.
SUN-BLEACHED RAINBOWS
The dreamy watercolour effect rainbow in muted, earthy oranges is a fabulous focal point in this room. The rattan and natural furniture allow the wall art to be the star of the show and the rose blush velvet armchair invites you in for super-cosy bedtime stories.
LEMON SHERBET
Slices of delicate and refreshing lemon punctuate the pale grey walls in this tutti frutti bedroom. Accents of peach pack a punch, and we love the clever use of the mud kitchen with its minty fascia, as a side table and book storage.
CLEAN PASTELS
We adore the subtle touches of summer pastels in this cool white bedroom. The blank canvas walls and sleek modern furniture allow the accessories to tell the colour story. Soft tones of mink and pink brightened with a dash of summer yellow and aqua in the strategically placed wall art. The geometric blush rug anchors the pastel palette and how cute is that wooden bubble gum machine?
SUMMER BOTANICALS
The olive wash on this natural flooring and the floral bedspreads create a botanical boho vibe to this girl’s bedroom. The devil is in the detail with the pastel floral design picked out in the monogram wall hook, bunting, storage cases and even on the soft furnishings and wall coverings in the doll’s house.
A touch of pale blue gives an alternative take on the boho botanical look with the sweetest delicate ivory bow cushion.
JUST PEACHY
Peachy petal pinks set the tone for this sublime girl’s bedroom, though its neutral scope makes it suitable for a guest room too. The daisy rattan headboard is a perfect match for the flower-patterned pile rug, and we love the subtle doves on the bedsheets and stencilled bow on the bedside table. A sunny burst of yellow in the form of a round button-detail cushion paired with a gold spotty cushion balance bring a welcome contrast to the palette.
A newborn nursery full of oversized bloom and beauty this interior project fuses pastel coral and tones of grey to provide an unmistakeably girlie finish. Faux foliage, greenery and a russet star cushion keep it contemporary and stylish.
HEARTS AND FLOWERS
All the frills make for the most romantic of dusky rose girls’ bedrooms. From the layered canopy and woven bed guard to the ruffled heart cushions and giant peonies, this room set oozes complex simplicity.
TROPICAL RAINBOWS
We are always in awe when a room has the power to transport us to a distant shore or faraway place. This altogether grown-up bedroom does just that. With sandy bed sheets and tonal chenille throws, luscious green foliage and that ‘just after the tropical storm’ pastel rainbow, we feel like we could be marooned on a Caribbean island.
NEON PASTELS
A hint of neon and a light sprinkling of slightly more vibrant pastel shades can add a certain pizzazz to otherwise muted room décor. We love the Miami beach vibe and subtle hints of art deco inspo in these three rooms. Of course, when nature works its magic and brings bright blue skies and sunshine, it adds a whole new dimension you just can’t replicate with a pot of paint.
A HINT OF MINT
Pale aqua adds a taste of neutrality to this ‘ice-cream parlouresque’ bedroom.
Mint green is also great alternative to classic greens for a boy’s bedroom.
SEASIDE VIBES
Reminiscent of sandy-toed, carefree holidays and coastal retreats, this beach-hut-blue tinged room allows the vacation to go on forever.
Like a favourite childhood T-shirt, faded by summers full of adventure, pastel-inspired décor injects a bright and breezy beach house vibe into your child’s bedroom. Sweet but not saccharine, muted and modern, it’s a timeless and tranquil interior style that will serve you and your kids well.
