Kids love to play and their creativity is without limits and no rules. We adults tend to stick to guides and rules, especially when decorating. Most of us will look in magazines for inspiration and read the editors tips about what to do and what not to do. And what if we set aside all of that and just let our creative juices flow? The result may surprise you and be excitingly playful.
THE RULE OF FUN
Maybe this should be your only rule when choosing a colour palette that you want to inspire play and fun. Let your imagination run wild – start with an element in the room that you spontanously fall in love with and continue from there by not planning to much around it. You will end up with a zesty place, full of character.
MAKE IT YOURS TOO
We rarely think about it, but colours we choose for our home are a direct reflection of our personality. They affect us daily, influencing our mood and thoughts.
If you are decorating a nursery, feel free to follow your heart and make choices that please you the most. Whatever that means. After all, you are going to spend so many hours there, and it is beneficial for your baby if you feel content. Having some contrasts is all the baby will need.
But if you have a toddler on your hands, make the colour choosing a family affair. Explore their preferences together and make sure the choice is made according to their personalities. Colours affect childrens moods greatly and by opting for what they really love will fill their daily life with whimsy and joy.
THE MORE COLOUR THE MERRIER
On the road to a colourful and playful kid’s room, there is no need to say goodbye to the magic of white. On the contrary, the neutral palette is by far the best backdrop for adding pops of colour. Use accents of strong, bright shades (of yellow, red, green or magenta), especially if your children are young. Work with what you already have, such as children’s books or bedding in playful hues, and use them as decor, or introduce some fancy bright wall decals and rugs. Unexpected pops of colour will break the monotony and breathe a new life into the space.
Sweet pastels and candy tones always create a youthful atmosphere. This feast of whimsy is sure to lift up even the lowest of spirits. Evoke the memories of days at the fairground and provide a delicious eye treat to your youngsters. You simply can’t be too juvenile when decorating a kids’ room.
Kids are full of energy and creativity, and so should be their room. And there is hardly a more energetic colour family than neon. If used in accents, neon will blend in perfectly with both monochrome and pastel setting. Make it bold, but don’t make it overwhelming. If you worry it will be too much, ask your kids, they will tell you.
All colours of the rainbow are home at in a child’s room. Even the rainbow itself. Don’t be afraid to go full scale! Liven up the room with plenty of vibrant patterns and shapes. In kids’ room, the more is more!
Forget about everything you learned about the colour wheel and just play!
