The boy’s room that we are showing you today is the perfect balance of style and boyish elements without making it look too “themy”. Jacinda Malloy, from Hide and Sleep kids interior studio in Australia, started with a three toned palette in orange, blue and greys and then continued to layer-in carefully selected details and toys. Today she’s giving us a peek inside this incredibly stylish space and sharing her advice on how to design your own perfect boy’s room.

COULD YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOY WHO LIVES IN THIS ROOM; HIS CHARACTER AND INTERESTS?

Harry is six years old boy who loves playing outdoors, playing sport, but with two older sisters, also likes hiding out in his room reading, playing with cars and his lego and star wars figurines.

WHAT WAS THE DESIGN BRIEF?

My design brief was to design a room that Harry could grow into and that he wouldn’t outgrow in a couple of years.  My clients home is very modern so I wanted to keep Harry’s room modern also.  My client and I chose a grid wallpaper that we felt was subtle yet still made an impact.  We picked a few Star wars and dinosaurs prints to decorate the walls.  Harry is interested in both these things now but maybe not in a couple of years, so these are inexpensive products that can easily be replaced as Harry’s interests change.

WHAT DID YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT DESIGNING THIS ROOM?

I loved designing this room as my client and I have similar taste which makes it easier.  I showed her the bedlinen, cushions and chair that I had in mind and she loved them all.  It’s always much more fun to design when your client is loving everything you choose and has faith in you to bring it all together.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS DESIGNING A BOY’S ROOM?

– Always involve your son.  Let him have a choice of prints, cushion, display toys etc.  I often pick four or five prints that I like and then have my little client pick from those.   It’s fun for your son to be involved, and it is their room so sometimes you will have to compromise and allow them a couple of things that you may not have chosen yourself.

– Choose good quality furniture.  This is where I advise clients to spend money.  Bed, storage options, bedside table, all these items if you choose well can last until they leave home which means you are not having to update every couple of years.  Choose items that are classic and won’t date.

– I recommend choosing bedding made from linen.  Linen is one of my favorite fabrics especially for boys rooms.  It wears better with age and looks great even when not ironed.  I also think it’s cool in summer and warm in winter.  It can be expensive, so look for it on sale, but it’s worth the extra dollars, as it really does wear well.

– I try to stick to two or three colours and then variations of those tones.  With so many colours in a  kid’s rooms with books and toys, I tend to choose linen, cushions, rugs, prints etc that contain my three colour choices.  In Harry’s room I mainly used, blues, greys and pops of orange.

Of course there are other colours in his room but by sticking with a few colors when decorating I find it blends and brings the look of the room together.  My choices for Harry’s room were because I wanted a modern, calm room, but if I wanted a bright, happy room then I would have picked two or three different colors, the colors all depend on the look and feeling that I am trying to achieve.

ABOUT HIDE & SLEEP KIDS INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO

Jacinda Malloy is currently pregnant with her first child who is due in October.  She started designing kids’ rooms in 2009 when she was studying interior design.  Her very first client asked her to design her girls nursery and she had so much fun that she decided that children’s rooms was what she wanted to do.

She  tells us “I always wanted to be a teacher as I loved children, but had a passion for interiors.  I felt designing for kids bought my love of design and my want for working with children together and was the perfect career for me.”

She lives in Melbourne but with the aid of technology, she has been fortunate enough to design rooms all over the world, from Dubai, to New York to the Netherlands.  Most of the rooms she designs are inspired by the children she is designing for.  When she is consulting she has a little chat with each child to get to know their likes and dislikes and from there she works out what she is going to do.

She also tell us that some children she meets are bright and bubbly and that she instantly knows  that she will have to use happy colours in their rooms, whereas another child may be withdrawn and shy, and like spending time on their own. Each time she likes to get to the bottom of what they would like to do in their room, and then design their room around those interests.

“I always feel like a private investigator trying to get as much info out of them as possible so I can design the best room that is suited to their personality.”
