Zara Rosa’s nursery has it all for a perfect baby girl nursery. A little bit of playfulness, charm, softness, harmony and style. Her mother Howra, who is a primary school teacher in Sydney was actually a little bit rushed when she had to finish decorating the nursery because she had to give birth earlier than expected – but you would never guess that at all! She tells us her story of how she suceeded so well decorating her babygirl’s nursery in a bohemian and french provincial style.

WHY ARE YOU INSPIRED BY THE BOHEMIAN AND FRENCH PROVINCIAL STYLE AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS STYLE FOR THE NURSERY?

I have a passion for places that are filled with love, coziness and all things pretty. These styles are able to seamlessly blend together to create a space of classic contemporary elegance. I love the neutral and pastel tones of these two styles – they make a space feel simple yet inviting!

Bohemian portrays a love of art, creativity and freedom. I love the idea of adding hand-painted antique furniture to add a touch or layer of unique character. A great deal of the charm of the French provincial style is how delicate, inviting and personal it looks. I’m inspired by the crisp white tones and rustic accessories that result in an elegant effect.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ELEMENT IN THE NURSERY?

Ah – not sure I can choose just one! I do like the teepee tent – it definitely brings out the inner bohemian and I can’t wait for my little girl to start playing inside it when she’s a little older. The colour theme of the pillows and its positioning make it a bold statement in the room. I also absolutely love the hanging macrame bassinet. The piece gives the finishing touch of the style and theme I was going for. It such a perfect little feature –  baby Zara Rose loves being rocked to sleep in it. It is so easy, peaceful and serene.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE DECORATING THIS NURSERY?

One of the challenges that we encountered was refurbishing the dresser we bought from the Salvo’s for just $60! At such a bargain price, we had our work cut out for us. The project took us a couple of days to sand down, remove the cupboard doors, prime and repaint the dresser. The thicker paint we used made the dresser drawers unable to fit into the draw sections. This meant we had to re-sand and repaint the drawers all over again! It was a delicate process but it ruined out just perfect once finished.

However, the most contesting challenge was time or lack thereof should I say. The ” plan” was to continue work as a class teacher until the end of year and then use the three weeks before my due date to finalise putting the room together. Unfortunately, in late pregnancy I was diagnosed with a liver condition called obstetric cholestasis which meant I would most likely be induced earlier.  This likeliness went from two weeks before due date to almost four weeks before due date.  I turned to my instagram account in search for some inspiration and suppliers. I was overwhelmed with the amount of things I had to purchase in the short time span I had. The Australian companies were fantastic with supplying everything in express time and some even went above and beyond the usual customer service. I only had 3 days after I finished up at work to finalise the nursery. With the support of my husband and family, we somehow managed to get every detail I had initially envisioned just right!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR PARENTS CREATING A ROOM FOR THEIR BABY OR CHILD?

Do your research first! Have a look at magazines, websites, blogs, Instagram, Pinterest, etc for nursery ideas and inspirations. Have a vision of what space you would like to create: the theme, colours, tones and style. Create a scrapbook or even an album on your phone dedicated to your ideas and get started early. Give yourself enough time to follow through with all your ideas without the stress because you never know what might just pop up.

It is very expensive to furnish a newborn’s bedroom! Instead of getting caught up in buying too much consider shopping at op shops or even your own home for bits and pieces to recycle.Think about exactly what you need for the baby as a newborn and things that can also be used for the growing years ahead to follow. Refurbishing is a timely and delicate process but just may be beneficial when trying to save some cash or even making something to your exact vision.

Howra has a passion for creativity and spends a lot of time decorating and making unique things for her classroom. She loves being able to create something or design a space she knows someone is going to enjoy. This might be helping with interior designs, making her own costumes, organising styling for events or even creating custom invitations. She is busy all the time so she loves spending quality time with her family and friends and share her ideas.
