Charlotte is a one year old girl who lives with her parents in Johannesburg, South Africa. She loves bunnies and particularly looking at books so her parents wanted to incorporate a child-friendly library in the playarea which is part of the part of the family’s living area. They commissioned the kids interior studio Cait’s Room Interiors to design and decorate it. Louise Bradbury, the founder, kindly answered some of our questions.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST THING THAT YOU THOUGHT OF BEFORE PLANNING THIS PLAYROOM?
The biggest obstacle was the available space, being part of the family’s living area, hence a lot of thought was put into maximising the area in terms of play, storage and reading; whilst bearing in mind a future Eames table & chairs set.
HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THIS PLAYROOM?
The look and feel is that of a tranquil, yet fun and functional space, combining both form and function.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR A PARENT DECORATING A PLAYROOM?
Invest in timeless, classic pieces that can be used for future siblings, regardless of their gender. A cozy reading tent with soft comfy cushions and wall mounted book ledges are always a winner, and make for a much loved functional reading nook, whilst offering the child a safe, happy place to engage in make-believe play.
If one prefers to retain a neutral canvas, colourful wall decals are a fabulous way to introduce colour and fun, and they can easily be removed or replaced when the child has outgrown them. Additional colour and texture can easily be incorporated in the use of a bunting, scatter cushions, toy baskets, and framed wall prints – all inexpensive, fun additions that can be changed without a hitch at any stage.
Where possible, avoid using a gender specific palette with permanent and/or semi-permanent fixtures.
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE DECORATING THIS PLAYROOM?
The budget and the available space – working with a very limited budget, we were required to maximise the ‘functional play’ effect with items that were cost effective, so as to incorporate as many aspects as we could within a set amount. Items such as the Eames table & chair set had to be put on hold for now, whilst a bespoke toybench-cum-window seat took pride of place to effectively combine seating, a beautiful cushion display and loads of toy storage.
WHAT ARE YOURS AND CHARLOTTE’S FAVOURITE ELEMENTS IN THE PLAYROOM?
It’s difficult to pinpoint one favourite aspect of the space, as we were so in love with the end result! The confetti wall feature looked stunning and effectively transformed an otherwise barren wall, while the window seat successfully added some much-needed window appeal with it’s gorgeous seat cushion and scatters. The palette, although rather sophisticated, really transformed the space into a classy, yet fun play area, whilst not at all detracting from the rest of the ‘adult’ living area, which remained a taupe palette.
Little Charlotte’s favourite piece was definitely the teepee! She absolutely adored having her very own space to play, take a nap, or look at her favourite book.

Most of the items can be found on Cait’s Room Interiors except for the teepee which was from Bunni and the gold spot scatter cushion and pink throw from Typo.
