Today we will be touring a boy’s room we fell in love with on Instagram lately, designed by homestylist and photographer Demi Fraser in Sydney, Australia. You’ll love this subtle surf inspired room with that gorgeous chequered wallpaper and just the perfect touches of peachy orange. Thank you, Demi, for letting us into your home and sharing the design details of Arlo’s room with us.

HOW DID YOU FIND THE INSPIRATION FOR ARLO’S ROOM?

I felt as though Gingham has been super popular but I hadn’t seen it in a room at this point. I contacted a bunch of Wallpaper companies until I found one who could do this for me. I found inspiration from accounts that had more hippy, surfy vibes but didn’t really include anything in Arlos room that these accounts had. It was more of a vibe that I knew I wanted to follow.

HOW WOULD YOU DESBRIBE ITS LOOK AND FEEL?

I would say it is bright and aspects of the space are surfy. It just feels super welcoming and happy when you walk into the space. There is so much colour with out it being too much.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST ITEM YOU PURCHASED FOR IT?

Some of the things in his space actually came from his previous room with his brother. Eg. Bed and bedding. Most of this room was a collaboration between brands and the first thing that was gifted, before I had even finalised the look was our name plaque by Letterly. Danielle had complete faith in my styling.

DID YOU HAVE ANY MUST-HAVES?

Yes! The Gingham wallpaper I would not compromise on. Everything that was included in the space was chosen to compliment the wallpaper.

WHAT WAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE ITEM OR FURNITURE?

The Wallpaper. I did get a very generous discount from Tiny Walls as part of the collaboration, however it was still the most expensive item. I would purchase from Tiny Walls 100x over. Their service was wonderful.

HOW DO YOU THINK THE ROOM WILL EVOLVE AS ARLO GROWS UP?

I think that the gingham wallpaper can be styled in a way that would suit Arlo into primary school aged easily. Removing the bunting, Choosing more mature prints and taking away the smaller furniture items and replacing those with more mature pieces will allow it to grow with him.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR OTHER PARENTS DECORATING A ROOM FOR A BOY?

Yes! I think Gingham, Terrazzo and Blocks of colour are very in right now. Blues and Mustards are my go to at the moment but just this week I came across an influencer who has just created a room for her son and used a gorgeous sage Gingham wallpaper and used different tones of green rattan to bring the space together. I know its hard to find things for boys that aren’t all trucks and dinosaurs but I highly recommend checking our the brands I’ve worked with as they are really trying to fill that gap in the market for boys decor.
