After a few years of selecting colours that evoke feelings of curiosity or originality, the Colour Institute Pantone decided this year to play a a safer card by choosing “Classic Blue” as the colour of the year for 2020. So compared to past years choices – where 2017 brought us a reviving renewal with Greenery, 2018 that conveyed a sense of imaginative drama with Ultra-Violet, and Living Coral that nurtured us with light-hearted energy in 2019; how will Classic Blue find its road to success?
Well, the choice doesn’t appeal to everyone, that’s for sure. Some people even describe the colour to “the seasonal depression as the new chic”. Here are Kids Interiors however, we don’t quite agree that it feels dull or depressing – on the contrary, we actually think that it isn’t as “classic” as pale or sky blue that are far more widely used for nurseries and kids’ rooms. So we wanted to find out more about this colour, and why it was chosen.
In Laurie Pressman, the Vice President of the Pantone, own words: “ It’s a colour that anticipates what’s going to happen next. What’s the future going to bring as we move into the evening hours?”
It might sound dramatic, but that’s not the intention. In fact, Pantone Institute explains that it is a reassuring colour. It speaks to our feelings of anticipation – when the sky is at dusk, the day isn’t over. You’re thinking what’s ahead. It provokes our thoughts and highlights our desire for this dependable, anchoring foundation on which to build as we embark into a new decade. In times where we find ourselves in uncertainty and unrest, it becomes even more important to have trust, faith and confidence. We can all relate to the blue sky at dusk.
As Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of Pantone, puts it:
“A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.”
What colour could be better for our little ones, than one that inspires connection, confidence and calm?
Its simple elegance is also an ideal colour for your child to grow with and can easily be updated by changing the complimentary hues, our favourites being orange, green or white. And of course, it’s not only for boys!
