Our searches for inspiring kids’ rooms often leads us to Australia, where we are lucky to chat with some extraordinary parents with incredible interior styles. This time it is mum Catharine who lives in Canberra, together with her partner Luke and their two children. The youngest is Riley, 4 years old, the lucky owner of this room that we are about to step into right now. Keep reading to find out all about how Catharine created this fun dinosaur world for him, ready to play in and create memories.

Even though the element of fun was one of the main inspirations when creating the space, Catharine didn’t forget that it also needed to be a good place for her son to sleep, so she decided to keep the colour scheme earthy and calm and limit the amount of tones and textures.

The first thing she set her eyes on for Riley’s big boy room was the wooden bed which helped her get an overall idea of what she had in mind for the room. However, Riley did get his say also and it seemed to be in line with Catharine’s initial ideas too.  When she asked him what his favourite colour would be and what he absolutely wanted in the room, the answer was “Green and dinosaurs!”

So the next step was the half green wall and then the dinosaurs sneaked in here and there but never invaded the space – on the artworks, the figurines and sometimes on the bedding.

Catharine also reveals that she loves to purchase a mix of products from small businesses on Instagram and then practical pieces from Ikea that she loves to customize. She added leather handles to the storage cupboards and painted the pine book shelf black.

When we asked her what her favourite things are in the space she answered the bed and the string shelves. “The bed is a beautiful timeless piece. I also have a lot of fun reorganizing all of Riley’s items on the string shelves.”

She also told us that dinosaurs might not be the main decorative element setting the tone for the room forever. Even if Riley is well into dinosaurs right now, Catharine reveals that he’s starting to show an interest in planets. With Catharine’s creativity and her son’s imagination, maybe they will co-exist? In any case it will be really interesting to see how the room will evolve (we will be following the updates for sure on Catharine’s Instagram @paperandlilies)

She left us with great tips for decorating a boy’s room:

“Have fun and think outside the box. Ask your boy what he likes, especially the colour and then use that as your basis. Riley didn’t pick the shade of green (and to be honest he would have gone for a much brighter shade, but he loves what I have done). Display their beautiful toys on shelves. And have lots of practical storage so you can easily pack it all away.”
