Today we are heading to Germany and will have the pleasure of talking to Ella, a designer, architect, stylist and proud mother of two gorgeous young children. The moment we laid eyes on her Instagram page Ella and Tiny T we fell in love with her style! And when we saw two-year-old Tiny T’s (older son’s adorable nickname) bedroom, we knew immediately that we had to ask Ella for a tour, which she kindly agreed to.

The first thing that Ella pointed out to us is that the room we are going to see today is continuously going through change. As her son slowly started growing from a baby to a toddler, the room needed to grow up and evolve as well to suit his needs and wishes.

The biggest change was when he switched from his cot to a junior bed at the age of two, inheriting his baby bed to his younger sister (that went to another room). This needed some shuffling around of furniture, actually still moving things around, apart from his chest and drawers, which is staying at the same place since I’ve put it there while being pregnant with T”.

Ella describes the room’s style as somewhat Scandinavian but not as minimalistic.

“I love using lots of natural wood combined with some muted colours, blue, grey, rust, a splash of dusty pink for the room to feel like a calm yet fun place as it is combining lots of different areas/activities: sleeping, reading nook, dressing, active play”.

Also, she loves bringing outdoor, natural elements inside, and besides wood, they have lots of plants and huge windows to let the light in.

Only last year, T’s room received the stylish blue-greenish colour coat we adore so much, – it’s calm and works so well as a backdrop for all the lovely wooden elements.

“I just love how calm this shade is and how well it works with wooden elements. Apart from that, I don’t have any particular scheme, it’s sea creatures clashing with wooden toys, dinosaurs, bright prints, wreaths, embroideries, star garlands and flag buntings. I’m trying to match things colourwise not according to a particular topic like for example a “safari themed room” or similar.”

While designing, Ella had to overcome some challenges which had to do with the room’s geometry.

The whole room is quite long but not very wide, so most of the furniture has to be pushed against the walls, there’s hardly space to put something in the middle of the room, that’s definitely challenging too”.

We just love everything about T’s room! But, probably the most amazing thing is how it manages to be both soo eye-catching and playful at the same time which is often quite challenging to achieve.

It’s hard to pick one favourite thing about the room. I just love the overall feel of it, the mishmash of different styles and decor objects, textures, colours. Definitely a special thing for me is the wooden leaf mobile I’ve made myself for T.”

“T adores the canopy and the huge playhouse the most as he loves hiding so much. And of course his play kitchen, where he’s cooking breakfast for his sister every morning and a coffee for me”.

For Ella, it’s all about balancing décor and colour without overdoing with neither of the two and of course lots of wooden elements!

“I’m just having fun creating a room I think my kids would love, where they can move around freely, scatter all the toys across the floor and get creative letting their imagination fly”.

If money was not a problem, I guess I would go for some custom made furniture pieces (especially for storage, maybe a combination of storage and bed) to make the most of the long and narrow room. And maybe some fancy wallpaper”.

We conclude our tour of Tiny T’s room with a useful tip from Ella.

My tip is always to go for quality instead of quantity and a good IKEA hack or DIY. For example, I get asked so often about our play kitchen, which is from IKEA, and we just painted it and changed/added the handles to fit the overall look of the room. My top tip for designing a room, in general, don’t be afraid to paint the walls (you can go just for one wall or even half wall), you can achieve such a change just by changing/adding some, and if you hate it, you can always change it back. It can tie everything up together and make your furniture or decor stand out at the same time“.
