The room we are about to tour today is one of those spaces you cannot but feel drawn to. Warm and inviting, this eclectic mix of design goodies with strong Boho – Scandi influence is a perfect place for a dreamer and creative soul to flourish.

Let’s meet the lucky owner of the room and her family!

eclectic warm girl's room

Frankie is three-year-old who lives in Penarth, South Wales with her mum and dad, and their French bulldog brother Tugboat. Her mum Miffy Shaw is obsessed with interior design, property renovations and DIY projects which she find therapeutic. She prefers unique pieces over mass produced products, so she often finds herself busy with crafts and upcycling.

The first piece they bought for the room was mustard Periwinkle (faux taxidermy pufferfish). Miffy spotted it at the local makers’ market, and it was love at first sight! The rest came after.

“I’d describe Frankie’s room as eclectic, Scandi- boho. I just kind of go with what I like. It’s full of nature, pattern and colour. Playful yet cozy, with lots of animals and it will be able to grow up with her. I think the burgundy is one of my favourite features in Frankie’s room along with her canopy and of course Periwinkle!”, Miffy explains.

Miffy is huge on dark, moody colours, but she knew she would need to soften the look a bit to make it a better fit for a kid’s space. The girly girl room with lots of pink was not an option for sure, but they agreed upon kipping a hint of pink from Frankie’s nursery (fireplace and some details). Miffy knew she wanted a mustard room and chose burgundy to breathe in some more character into the space. The wallpaper gave the room a playful punch and popped beautifully next to burgundy and mustard.

“It took quite a while to decided exactly what walls I should paint, but in the end, I decided to go with the ceiling – the 5th wall. I liked that the ceiling was dark and would make the light fitting stand out more. It was previously downstairs in the front room, but Frankie loved it, so we decided to put it in her room instead”, says Miffy.

The biggest challenge in Frankie’s room was space. Even though it is a double room, there wasn’t that much usable space for furniture in it, so her parents had to improvise. They moved the radiator under the window to free up more space and came up with a perfect plan for the fireplace wall. The larger alcove now hosts the cupboard, and the smaller one made for a perfect fit for a reading nook with a canopy.

“The picture rail I struggled with for a while too as I wanted to keep any original features, but didn’t want to paper above it. I decided to bring the burgundy down more by painting the picture rail and the walls above it burgundy too. I love how it turned out! So what originally was giving me a headache ended up giving me my perfect design!”, Miffy continues.

ideas to decorate a shelf

Frankie’s cupboard was a £10 local find painted over with Annie Sloan chalk paint. Miffy removed the old hanger inside and added a shelf and two copper pipes as hanging rails.

“I also up-cycled the little bedside cabinet in her room. It was from eBay and I loved its legs! I painted it and bought a cute little cloud doorknob for it”, says Miffy.

The shelves in Frankie’s room are also DIY and pretty much a standard in their house. Some scaffolding planks and brackets bought from eBay. They put shelves high up to display trinkets and memories out of Frankie’s reach, and left everything else low on the ground for her to reach and play with.

Miffy even made the pink wall hanging with some wool looped around a large brass hoop.

“If money (and time!) were no object right now, we would be building her a bed house! When I was a little girl, my dad built my sister and I a house in our bedroom! We went to my nan’s, and it was a surprise when we got back. We bought Frankie a cute bed from IKEA rather than my dream wicker daybed as they are such value for money and we knew at some point we would make her a house too. My husband is a builder and specializes in loft conversations, so we are planning on a house now that will be appropriate for her age and us being able to read to her, then later on a little mini loft conversation for the next phase!”

Take Miffy’s word on this:

“My top tip when doing a kids’ room is to be brave! You can go as wild as you’d like in a kid’s room and get away with it!”
