In preparation for her baby’s arrival, Ellen Wright created a totally unique space inspired by her muse and hero David Bowie. The theme itself is quite daring and unusual for a baby nursery, and on top of that, Ellen planned it not knowing the gender of her baby! Ellen’s exciting background working in lots of creative fields such as party organization for celebrities, music video animation for Sir Paul McCartney, art direction for supercool brands and streetwear fashion probably influenced the fun and artistic design process too. We were curious to find out more from behind the scenes so keep on reading..

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE THAT YOUR BABY’S NURSERY WOULD HAVE A DAVID BOWIE THEME – AND WHY?

I am a huge Bowie fan and most of my life has been Bowie themed along the way. He’s a huge inspiration to me in my career too. When he died it really shook my world and I was devastated. In the same year I got married with a Bowie theme wedding and conceived my daughter. So it seemed only right to inject some Bowie memories into her room and hopefully it will inspire her in the way he inspired me.

WHAT WAS THE JUMPING-OFF POINT FOR THE DESIGN?

I am a designer and artist so I wanted to create a beautiful mural in her room. One that would be calming and peaceful to gaze but also not be too gender specific as I didn’t know the sex of my baby. I didn’t want to go too heavily down the sci fi space route but needed to inject some of it. So I went for a navy wall and a giant moon… I asked my sister (Charlotte Wright) who’s a sign writer to write” There’s a starman waiting in the sky”. I wanted there to be a story to explain to my daughter when she’s old enough to know. The sign writing I wanted in a neon flash and 80’s movie style typography to reflect my favourite era. I had also fallen in love with and bought a rose gold metal crib, so the rest of the room was styled around that, which is why I used restive wood and copper piping to make the shelves.

HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO CREATE A NEUTRAL-GENDER FEEL TO IT?

I felt the peach and navy blue had the right balance to make it gender neutral. The copper piping and wood made it less babyish too which helped keep it gender neutral as it was more of an on trend look. My plan was to add more peach or navy accessories depending on what I had but all the Bowie dolls and gender neutral toys kept the right balance so I didn’t need to.

ARE THERE ANY DIY OR HANDMADE ELEMENTS IN THE ROOM?

I wanted all the lovely handmade blankets and collectible handmade toys on show, along with all the beautiful clothes. So I designed a copper pipe and wood shelving unit. This was made by my husband (who is a plumber) and I used all the lovely items to style it. He made a lovely copper pipe clothes rack which eventually can turn back into shelves once this is no longer a nursery. It can evolve as my baby grows up.

HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU’RE IN THE NURSERY?

At peace. My daughter’s finally started acknowledging it and lays there fixated on it whilst I dress her in the morning. I also go in there to do my yoga in front of the moon now too, I wish I could have that mural in every room of the house at it does have a lovely calming dream like effect, exactly what I wanted from it. The soft peaches and coppers give the room a lovely warmth too.
