Danielle is a mother of two lovely girls, Maddie, two years old, and Anna, seven months. When Danielle and her husband built their new home in Rockwall near Dallas last year, the playroom was one of the first rooms to be completed. Danielle was pregnant with Anna at the time and she really wanted to make sure that Maddie had a fun place to play and keep herself occupied before and after her baby sister arrived. She tells us that it has been a wonderful space to have for her and she has loved watching her little imagination run wild. Today she’s giving us a peek inside this incredibly special space and sharing her advice on how to design your own perfect playroom.

WHAT WAS THE MOST FUN THING DECORATING THIS PLAYROOM?

Without question, it was imagining the girls playing in it! It really brought out my inner child. By stepping back into my little girl memories and remembering what I loved to do as a child, I got inspired by how it would provide the space and tools for my little ones to play “pretend” and invent their own imaginative fun. I enjoyed adding little elements that made it seem all the more realistic, too. The pineapple wall decals that give the look of wallpaper, the mini curtains above the kitchen sink, and the personalized diner sign, are added touches that make the room extra fun. Even us adults are encouraged to play pretend alongside the little ones!

HOW DO YOU THINK IT WILL EVOLVE WITH MADDIE’S LITTLE SISTER, ANNA, PLAYING IN IT TOO?

It will be some time yet before Anna is able to actively play pretend in the playroom with her big sister Maddie, but that doesn’t stop Maddie from trying to include her. She will tip a tea cup in her mouth as if she’s feeding her and say, “Yummy!” for her. I sometimes even set Anna up in her bumpo at the table so that they can play tea party together. It’s hilarious and cute all rolled into one!

WHAT DOES MADDIE LOVE THE MOST IN THE PLAYROOM?

Maddie’s favourite thing to do in the playroom is play chef and waitress. She loves to put on her little apron and chef hat and serve me different meals. She gets a kick out of seeing my reaction after ‘trying’ each of her food combos.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PRACTICAL TIPS TO SHARE WITH US FOR PLANNING AND DECORATING A PLAYROOM?

Try to make it a fun room for not only your children to be in, but you, too! I intentionally made each corner of the playroom a separate play area, with different themes and activites. This allows for extra space in the middle of the room. Also, utilizing storage bins, baskets, and bookshelves are key. The bins don’t have to be organized. Just having a place to put the miscellaneous toys is so helpful for quick cleanup.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE STORES FOR PLAYROOM FURNITURE AND DECOR?

My top two, go-to stores for decorating the playroom are Ikea and Pottery Barn Kids. Ikea has loads of practical and inexpensive storage solutions for children’s spaces.  And, I have a hard time passing up on Pottery Barn Kid’s super cute play furniture and decor; they provide so much inspiration in their online and magazine layouts!
