Jacob’s nursery is the perfect combination of neutrals, earthy, natural elements and warm textures. When Kimberley Murdoch, founder of Pint Size Interiors was asked by her childhood friend to design the nursery for her boy-to-be, she was thrilled. We love the timeless elegant feel she has achieved for the nursery by combing greys and beiges in different hues and making it special by incorporating a discrete safari theme.

WHAT WAS THE INITIAL IDEA BEFORE DESIGNING THE NURSERY?

Our initial idea for this space was something neutral and classic that could work for a baby boy but easily be used again as a nursery for future children and eventually transition back into a spare bedroom.

WHAT WERE THE MUST-HAVES?

Jacob’s parents fell in love with the Sharon Montrose prints from The Animal Print Shop that we suggested, and they were hooked on the subtle safari theme.  From there we found the embroidered safari bedding from Restoration Hardware Baby & Child, which was ultimately a splurge item, but lends to the soft and sweet safari feel of the space perfectly.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RESOURCES FOR BABY AND CHILDREN’S PRODUCTS THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

We often find ourselves splurging on the inspirational pieces, whether it’s an accent wallpaper, awesome light fixture or in this case, the artwork and bedding. From there, we try to be creative in tying the rest of the space together while staying on budget. We love flea markets and local boutiques for unique items that you can’t find just anywhere, and we love to scour discount home stores like Homesense and/or Homegoods for things that can add to the space at a fraction of the cost. Tap into your hand-me downs too! A lot of clients we talk to have furniture pieces or collectables that make great nursery starting points. Think old dressers that can be refinished as change tables, vintage tea cup collections, old car collections, paintings etc. that can personalize a space and lend to a theme.

WHAT PIECES FROM THE NURSERY DO YOU THINK WILL BE USED AND KEPT FOR YEARS TO COME?

The recliner/glider was a floor model so we got an excellent discount, but it is so unbelievably comfy and neutral in colour so it could easily be used long after babies are too big to be rocked to sleep. The rug is also such a great pattern and its neutral colours allow it to transition to any space.

WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF DESIGNING THE NURSERY?

We believe the most rewarding part of designing any space is watching a vision come together. You can try and plan as much as possible with a design board and online shopping….but nothing beats the thrill of finding those perfect pieces where you least expect them and watching them complete the space to turn out even better than you originally imagined.

CAN YOU OFFER ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO PARENTS DECORATING A NURSERY FOR THE FIRST TIME?

In the end, you will probably spend more time enjoying the space then your baby will. A lot of feeding, changing, sleep training, laundry folding, clothes organizing, etc. will happen in that space so why not make it something you will enjoy just as much as they will as they get older.  Have fun with the design, use existing pieces or heirlooms as inspiration if you can, and try to think long-term so that you can easily let the space grow with your child and your home.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ELEMENT IN THE NURSERY?

It might sound broad, but our favourite element is the texture in the space.  The combination of soft, sweet bedding, jute rope details on the dresser knobs and table lamp, the metal elephant head, wood frames, soft shaggy carpet and clean crisp white furniture creates a great mixture of texture that is great for parents and baby to see and touch.

ABOUT PINT SIZE INTERIORS

Pint Size Interiors was founded by two moms with a passion for interior design and everything kid-friendly.  After meeting in college studying Interior Design, they both graduated and went on to work in different cities in Ontario doing different design jobs. Kimberly worked in custom kitchens & cabinetry, and Jennifer worked in office furniture and design. Eventually they came back together to work in Healthcare planning and design and supported each other through three maternity leaves combined. Pint Size Interiors started as a daydream while trying to navigate our love of fun, authentic, kid-friendly design, but now they are enjoying making it a reality for our clients in the Greater Toronto and Greater Hamilton area.
