Kristy Young started her kids interior design business Minnie and Me back in 2016 and we were then lucky to feature her first nursery that she created for her daughter Minnie. During the past two years Kristy has been busy designing more rooms and creating full sized wallpaper as well as wallpapers for dollhouses and playkitchens. Today she is showing us a recent project that she created for five year old Eliza, who lives with her parents in a bayside suburb in Melbourne. Kristy absolutely loved to create this pretty yet mature space and tells us more about it.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE COLOUR SCHEME?

The family requested pastels and grey with maybe a splash of colour.  My initial inspo for the room came from the lovely store of Devine Design by Derya, who has a grey and pink cladded wall with gold trim.  She also happens to feature our peony garden wallpaper in her store.
The colour scheme is one of my favourite things about the room, you can’t go wrong with mint/aqua combined with pink and hints of gold and grey.  I initially was going with only pink, grey, pink and gold. I was planning on using a plain white doona cover but then I found the gorgeous doona cover from Adairs Kids, held it up against the wallpaper and we were all sold, it lifted the room to even higher heights and gave a pop.  We then ordered the mint cushion, garland and the custom-made origami mobile to tie everything together beautifully.  Eliza already owned the dollhouse and when I noticed how beautifully it worked with the colour palette, I decided to make it a feature.

WHAT WAS THE VERY FIRST ELEMENT YOU KNEW WOULD FIT IN PERFECTLY INTO THE ROOM?

The first thing I always choose when designing a kid’s room is the wallpaper.  Now that we produce our own wallpapers, I really struggle not to include beautiful and unique wallpaper in every room I design.  Wallpaper adds serious wow to a room, it’s an easy way to add colour and character to a room.  I usually love big florals, but florals were not in the family’s brief.  My next favourite thing, which was in the family’s brief was pink! Pink and wall panels are both on trend right now, so we went with faux pink wood panel wallpaper on three walls, up to the picture rail.   Bree wanted the wallpaper to really stand out so we went with a statement blush over a more subtle blush, which we sell in dollhouse size.

DID YOUR PERSONAL STYLE INFLUENCE ANY DESIGN CHOICES?

Probably, I think its hard to design a room that you don’t love. My designs that have turned out the best, would be rooms that I would have in my own home.  I guess I’m more passionate about something I love and its easier to put it all together.  Clients choose me because they resonate with my style anyway so its then easy to work together.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR CREATING THIS KIND OF GIRL’S ROOM?

1/ Amazing wallpaper or a feature wall

2/ Lots of gorgeous décor, I just love walking in to a girl’s room and admiring all the pretties – you must have great shelving to house it all

3/ A functional area e.g. a reading nook and/ or desk to encourage a love of books

4/ Fairy lights and canopy – they add a sense of magic

5/ Beautiful artworks – the bigger the better

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING A KIDS INTERIOR DESIGNER?

It’s really a lovely job. It is so cool to see a room you designed come to life, for me there is that moment of anxiety in the early stages “Is this all going to work together?!” But when it does, it’s a great feeling.

WHY DO YOU THINK KIDS INTERIOR DESIGN HAS BECOME SO POPULAR IN AUSTRALIA DURING THE LAST FEW YEAR?

I guess Instagram has really lifted the bar and made people excited about creating beautiful spaces for their little ones.  People generally are out sourcing services, busy working mums need help with the things that are not up our alley!!
