Eclectic kids’ rooms follow no design rules and sometimes they are so fun and unique that you just wonder how on earth they came about! Something sparks the creative design process and it could be a bold and original wallpaper or walldecor, an interesting colour combination, a bespoke unusual kidsbed, kidsrug or a vintage piece of décor found on a fleemarket for example. Even though they are all unique in their own ways, they all tend to have a playful feel allowing children to run around and be carefree.

If you have decided to make a statement in the kidsroom by introducing a wallpaper then don’t just browse through kids’ wallpaper catalogues. Think of looking at designer wallpaper that are originally intended for adult rooms also. You will be surprised of the eclectic look you can create by adding decor accents in totally different colours and patterns from the wallpaper and how amazing it will look! Don’t be afraid of mixing traditional with modern also and keep the word contrast in mind.

Try not to go for the obvious kids colourschemes as pink with mintgreen and grey for girls and grey and blue for boys. Play around with colour schemes before making any decisions by cutting out different colours you see from various sources such as clothes from fashion magazines, paint colour swatches, fabric samples or why not a contemporary art catalogue. You might end up with a really unique nursery or kids’ room as this one in ochre orange and purple with dashes of mustard yellow and pink.

Play around with shapes and graphics. Circular shapes will instantly pop up the kidsroom and you can even paint them yourself onto the walls.

Don’t be afraid of using dark and rich wallpaints for one of the walls. It won’t feel dark and gloomy at all but on the contrary very cosy and stylish if you add several white elements on the decor and bedding .

Introduce one or several vintage elements in the room that you are sure won’t be found in any other nursery or kidsroom.

Mix ethnic decor from various countries that you can have had fun collecting from your travels. It can be anything from turkish colourful coffeetables to handmade crochet blankets from Peru, a maroccan rug..you name it!  It can also be something your child found on a market or maybe shells from the beach that you turn into a garland during a rainy diy afternoon.

Don’t plan too much. When you see something you like..buy it. The most important when you decorate an eclectic kidsroom is that you have fun! If you keep all walls crispy white then you can really bring in so many different colours and whatever you do, don’t try to match anything. Also let your child choose decor items he or she likes which will make it even more personal.
