From the safety of their mother’s womb where they have been embracing themselves for nine months, to their nurseries and latter on bedrooms, twins are sharing the same space, toys and childhood together from day one. Until they are old enough to want separate rooms due to privacy, and especially if they are of different gender, your darling twins are going to need a functional and well-organised bedroom.

It’s not desirable to separate twins, particularly in the early days because, for obvious reasons, they are used to being in close proximity. Young toddlers draw comfort from being close together and enjoy each other’s company very much. After all, the only thing they have ever known is being scrunched up against their brother or sister.

They should be able to have enough room for socialisation and common play time, and to a certain extent separate, private zones for doing homework, studying and other individual activities.

When it comes to bedtime, depending on the size of the room and your personal preferences, there are plenty of solutions out there, from simple beds to whacky and fun bunk bed designs. If you opt for matching beds and bedsheets, you can start creating a mirror image room, where your identical twins will feel as absolute equals. Just be careful not to confuse the two! But that’s far from the only solution. The beds could be arranged in one continuous line, scattered without any apparent order or even joined together. Whatever your twins feel comfortable with or the shape of the room dictates.

Bunk and loft beds are a whole other story. The two are not only perfect space-saving pieces of furniture, but they are also loved by all the kids out there! You’ll just have to deal with the common dispute of who’s going to be sleeping on the top bunk. With plenty of space for storage and the fact that the mattresses are on top of each other, small rooms rejoice at the very sight of them. And with the loft bed, you’ll be able to kill two flies with one swat – the sleeping and working area.

This way they’ll both have their very own tucked away private areas to concentrate on their homework without bothering each other.

And finally, the colour palettes! Whether you were planning on designing the room from scratch or just redecorating, make sure to check out our predictions for 2018’s colours of the year for inspiration.

Colours are a perfect way of separating the twin’s areas of the room

If you wish to zone the twin’s room in a way that will provide them both with some personal space, what better way to do it than with two different colours. And if you have a boy and a girl, either go neutral or try experimenting with hues. Something in the line of the classic Pantone’s Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue would put a smile on both of their faces for sure.
