In search for a relaxed island vibe and a more simplistic lifestyle, Petria, the owner of Coco Rose Interiors discovered beautiful handmade decor and furniture pieces that were both raw and earthy, yet sumptuous in style while living with her family in Indonesia. Now that the family is back in Australia, Petria combines her passion for children’s interiors whilst also being at home supporting her three daughters. The room she created for her nine year old daughter, Rhiana, reflects the bohemian style of Coco Interiors and Petria’s appreciation of quality handmade products made out of natural materials. Today she tells us more about this beautiful space.

earthy natural girls room

“I originally wanted to create a tropical room with bright elements but came across the book “Botanicum” curated by Katie Scott and Kathy Willis which changed my direction.”

“Rhiana is at that transitional age as a young girl moving towards teens so I wanted to create a room that would last Rhiana into her highschool years, yet still hold her interest now” Petria explains.

“All elements are natural and earthy and have a touch of her personality within the room. The feature wallpaper I chose reflects Rhiana’s intense love for nature and specifically animals. As you can see it depicts birds nests, feathers and various botanicals. Similarly, I used our shell chandelier as a mobile above her bed as she loves the beach and using the day to search for crabs and collect shells amongst the rock pools. I like to style walls, whether that be with feature wallpaper or a cluster of prints and decor.  Whenever someone thinks hard about an idea or tries to remember something, it’s instinctive to look up, so I wanted some thought provoking pieces up high. I think this is the next interior craze to come.”

“Rhiana is a very active little girl so I wanted to create a relaxed dreamy space for her to come back to for quiet times in her room. She absolutely loves reading so I felt it was also important to nurture positive behaviours she already has by styling her room with books. I still needed the space to be practical while allowing her to play and grow as a child.”

“I love the added the touch of fresh plants to home interiors as it totally changes the dynamic of any room and breaths life into it. Again, it resonates well with Rhiana’s love for nature and creates a fresh vibrant space that she will be happy to study in as she moves through her schooling years.”

“Like myself, I really feel like parents are wanting to find their roots again and raise there children in the same way. With this in mind I’ve kept everything as natural as possible and used a back to basics styling approach. I love to shop small where ever possible and believe there are some amazing small business out there, so I carefully selected products from businesses that I love, can help feed my daughter’s inquiring mind and reflect the style I wanted to create in this room.”

Thank you Petria! Coco Rose Interiors
