Kayla Byington from nursery and kids interior design studio Hello Love has always had a love for interiors, but thinks there is just something about a child’s room that is the perfect combination of whimsy and function. And because little ones are only little for such a short time, she loves to embrace it, and create something just for them. Today she’s giving us a visit of her daughter’s, EmmaJames’s, classy and orginal space and sharing her behind-the-scenes experience and a few tips.
DID STYLE YOUR DAUGHTER’S NURSERY WITH A SPECIFIC THEME IN MIND?
Not really, but I had a few goals: feminine, but not girly; elegant, but not stuffy; playful, but not childish. I wanted it to be a space we both could feel at home in.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE ROOM?
Before designing my daughter’s room, the last colour I would have expected to see in it was pink. But here’s my out: this isn’t really pink, it’s blush, and blush is just classy. I paired it with gold accents to make it even more elegant – my goal was to create a palette (and room) that was feminine but strong because I believe in powerful women. This is why I chose to pair the blush (pink) and gold with Clark & Kensington’s Ominous Cloud – the warm grey provided a strong background for my feminine details.
I want my daughter to grow up knowing she can be beautiful and strong. My favorite quote, and something that describes her so accurately, “Though she be but little, she is fierce,” hangs over her dresser.
I also knew I wanted this room to be as functional as it was beautiful, so I chose the Graham Glider for its comfort, floating shelves and (lots of) baskets for storage, and a handful of soft things to cuddle up with in the middle of the night.
DID YOU MAKE ANYTHING YOURSELF IN THE ROOM?
Yes, I made the chalkboard (and wrote “Hello World”), the ribbon garland that hangs over the chalkboard, and the feather mobile. I also added the roses on the teepee.
DID YOU FACE ANY CHALLENGES WHILE CREATING THIS SPACE?
I think the biggest challenge with every room is considering how to make the space work best for mamas (and daddies), not just what is the prettiest. For example, I really wanted to hide the diaper genie on the far side of the dresser so it couldn’t be seen from the door, but it just wasn’t practical. You have to be practical when you’re dealing with poo.
ARE THERE ANY ELEMENTS THAT YOU WILL KEEP FOR EMMAJAMES’S FUTURE TODDLER’S ROOM?
My goal was to create a room that could grow with her – I purposely did not want a “baby” room, because as much as I love to redecorate, it’s expensive! When I do though, I hope to incorporate the prints that hang over the dresser. They are my favourites.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR CREATING THIS STYLE OF NURSERY?
Set the tone with a statement piece. For me, the art prints summed up what I wanted for EmmaJames’ room, and I worked from there.
Be subtle with color—a little can go a long way.
Lots of textures give the room interest and add elegance.
ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR KIDS INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS RIGHT NOW THAT YOU ARE FOND OF?
I am loving the big floral wallpapers and murals – so gorgeous!
WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR INSPIRATION?
I feel like this is a cliche answer, but I look and find inspiration everywhere. I geek out over the latest West Elm catalog, I think all things Anthropologie are dreamy, and I always spend too much time in the Target home interior aisles. Of course, Instagram is a great resource to spark the imagination (like @kidsinteriors_com!)
